Shaping the Future of our Club Together in 2025!

St George’s Rowing Club is one of the oldest sporting clubs in New Zealand.  Founded in St George’s Bay Auckland in 1863 it has been the home of thousands of rowers over the past 140 years: the Club has been in its current clubrooms since 1949 (74 years), perfectly situated at the end of Kings Rd on the Tamaki River giving easy access onto and off the water. This year’s upgrade of the east-end section of St Georges Rowing Club (SGRC) will replace our single-story club-house with a modern two-story building. Designed in collaboration with our partners Tamaki Outrigger Canoe Club (TOCC), this new space will be better for both clubs and for the wider Tamaki River community .

The redevelopment enhances community engagement, supports the development of water skills, and promotes sports and physical fitness—promising a vibrant and inclusive space for generations ahead.

THE NEW CLUBROOMS

The building upgrade is finally within reach, with completion expected by late 2025.
What’s Getting Better:

✅ New east side 2 storey building
✅ Better activity areas to streamline access
✅ Centralising storage, showers, toilets, and kitchen facilities for greater efficiency

The upgraded facility has dedicated zones: coach boats, rowing equipment storage, wakaama area, repairs and maintenance, and exercise area.
More than just a do-up, this project will make the club into a true community space, making water sports easier to access for recreational and competitive athletes for years to come.

Our Legacy & History

The Club’s History St Georges Rowing Club is one of the oldest sporting clubs in New Zealand. Since 1863, it’s been home to thousands of rowers. The club has been in its current location since 1949, perfectly situated at the end of Kings Rd on the Tamaki River, providing easy water access.

We can’t fault the location: let’s build infrastructure to match!

The Building’s Past St Georges moved to its current site on the Panmure Wharf Reserve in 1949. Several times since then, the clubrooms have been expanded: first in 1977, when the old Panmure Yacht Club building was shifted over and attached to the east end of SGRC, and again in 1985, with new boat storage added.

The existing training room, dating from 1935, is showing its age! To ensure the club’s long-term future, it’s high time for a sustainable upgrade that will fit the future and benefit generations to come.

Building the Future

Thanks to a generous $350,000 funding offer from Evan Snyder and Trish Fenton, the long-awaited redevelopment of the St Georges clubrooms is finally within reach!

Key Project Milestones Achieved:

✅ Extended our Council lease to 25 years
✅ Designed, consulted, and finalised plans—including space for TOCC
✅ Secured Auckland Council Parks and Reserves approval
✅ Obtained Resource Consent
✅ Received firm construction quotes

We are currently in the process of securing Building Consent and have applied for funding support from the Lottery Community Facility Fund and the Sports & Recreation Facility Investment Fund. Fingers crossed…

With these big steps made, we’re very close to making this vision a reality!

Benefits of the Rebuild

This upgrade is going to totally change how we do things by creating three main zones for
better use of the space:

✅ Training Zone – Warm, dry, and fit-for-purpose – YES for athlete development.
✅ Storage Zone – Safety boats stored separately from rowing shells – YES to reducing the damage.
✅ Service Zone – Bathrooms and kitchen facilities relocated – YES to freeing up space for boat storage.

What’s Even Better:

✅  Dedicated space for TOCC – As Mana Whenua of the Tamaki Awa, TOCC will finally have a home on the Panmure Wharf Reserve, and becoming our partner.
✅ Addressing overcrowding – Room to move! Room to swing a cat! .
✅  Improved health & safety – Reducing vehicular and foot traffic crossover – much safer for everyone.
✅  Better security – Less boat damage, better building security, and lowered risk of theft or vandalism.

This project will make the club so much better but also strengthen our community’s
connection to the water.
